The biggest challenge in creating a shirt for a show as beloved and iconic as "The Lion King" is giving it personality without copying previous designs. Unlike "Alice in Wonderland," "The Lion King" is strictly a Disney property, and its iconography exists with little fluctuation.
For the logo, I took inspiraton from the movie's logo, but rendered with a slightly more playful, san-serif font (PTF Nordic Round).
The rest of the design is based on the tradition of African mud cloth (Bogolanfini), which typically incorporates a variety of dots, lines, circles, squiggles, etc. into repetitive lines. This helped tie the shirt into the aesthetic of the produciton, which used similar patterning in its set design.
